Innocent PeopleDescription:
In the days and weeks after the 9/11 attacks, fear and
anger permeate the American psyche. Sadia Abdullah, a Muslim housewife and
mother of five, negotiates the terror of the times.
Excerpt:
I continue to watch as catastrophe rules on national
television. After a while, I become anxious about Salahuddin and the boys.
They should be home by now. I pull myself away from the TV screen to look
out the front window for our blue minivan.
What I see looks so strange, because everything is the
same. There are no burning buildings or screaming people. Mrs. Robinson is
out watering her flowers, as usual--she must not have heard the news yet.
The Browns' dog is barking. The mail truck is parked up the street, and the
mailman is calmly making his rounds. The morning newspaper is still on our
lawn. In the excitement of getting the kids off to school, thinking about
my job interview and watching terrorist attacks, I had completely forgotten
about it. It doesn't seem worth reading now. There could never be news as
important, as urgent, as what is happening before my eyes, courtesy of
network television.
I leave the neighborhood scene of deceptive calm and go
back to sit on the couch in my living room, in my small Midwestern town,
watching the disaster unfold one thousand miles away.
